MetaMix is a cross between a musical composition, a digital audio player, an interactive experience, a software tool, and a work of conceptual art. Feed MetaMix your favorite audio track and listen as familiar music is transformed into a new listening experience. MetaMix superimposes new musical structures onto existing music by turning special mathematical integer sequences into new musical forms. These musical forms are used to “remix” the audio track you choose.

I recorded a short piano piece and processed it through MetaMix:

Sapling 1.1: Standalone Sound-Mangling Application Built With Max/MSP 5 (OSX)

This free application has a lot going for it and with a little practice, some very unique sounds can be found in it. The only disadvantage that I can see is that it takes only aiff audio files, but there are free and inexpensive audio converters out there if any conversion is necessary.  Here are the key features as listed by the web site:

•control loop start time, size, and playback speed of four audio files
• drag and drop a folder of sound files for quick access to custom libraries of sounds
• randomizing of various parameters for unexpected results
• built-in stereo reverb and filtering effects
• record output to disk for further processing or conversion to other file formats
• store your favorite presets quickly and easily
• cpu monitor gives you realtime feedback concerning Sapling’s tax on your machine
• independent effects sends for each file and panning/balance control
• freeware (but <a title=”https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=k@sineqube.com&item_name=sineqube+software&method=”post”donations welcome)
• On/off toggles for each individual file, with hotkeys
• Ability to save and load presets to and from disk
• Access to I/O settings (Note: this feature was added to fulfill user requests. It has had minimal testing by the beta team, but all reports were positive).

“In spite of its name, the generation of tonal melodies is not the principal aim of Melody Generator II. Its goal is scientific: to establish our understanding of tonal music by developing an artificial music generator and evaluating the well-formednes and ‘quality’ of the melodies it yields.

For this purpose, Melody Generator II incorporates a large amount of knowledge about tonal music, collected in theoretical and experimental research, which forms the basis for the construction of tonal melodies.”

Melody Generator II differs from systems that help users to create melodies by providing a platform for generating music that assists the user to obey the rules of tonal music (e.g. non-chord tone resolution, voice leading, motive development). These systems basically constrain the selection of tones and chords but the actual selection is still made by the user. Melody Generator II carries out the complete process of melody construction, although the user can edit the result in various ways.

Patchwork: Modular Sound Synthesis in Flash

Patchwork is a Flash application for realtime modular sound synthesis. You can connect basic sound generation or modification modules to create either music, effects or utter noisy crap. Although at the moment it has an interface for creating a so-called patch, you will in the future be able to run your creations standalone, which means: in your own site or game.

Elysium: An Interactive Generative MIDI Sequencer (OSX)

I haven’t had much time to work with this application but I can see a lot of potential here. The interface is so different than a standard MIDI sequencer that it forces you to adapt yourself to a new style of composition.  It’s not hard to use and the MIDI data flowed nicely into Logic.  There are a lot of options with this software and if you are a Mac user, give it a workout.
